Manini idea about grip strength as a screening tool for functional impairment

To conjure up some discussion I would like to know your thoughts on the following paper proposal.  I’m interested in whether a grip strength assessment (a viable tool to use in the clinic) is a useful screening tool to identify early declines in functional limitation and outright disability.  I understand there is a fair amount published with grip strength and outcomes, but this analysis would seek to identify a specific cutpoint in the distribution of grip strengths that can be used to predict future functional limitations.  There was a recent publication on this by a European group and I believe we could address this question much better in the WHI.  So what do you think?
